Students who have an exceptional record of publication may be admitted to the Ph. D. It is chaired by the Graduate Programme Chair. Most of the work of this committee is delegated to a subcommittee called the Graduate Executive Committee (GEC), consisting of the Graduate Programme Chair, two faculty members, the Graduate Secretary, and the Graduate Student Representative. The GEC deals with the day- to- day running of the Graduate Programme. The full committee (GPC) only meets when programme changes are proposed, when graduate applications are being considered, and to conduct Annual Progress Reviews. The student gains a comprehensive understanding of the discipline and strives to acquire a general knowledge of world prehistory, physical anthropology, and archaeological theory and method, in addition to gaining knowledge and expertise in particular areas of research interest. A distinction is made between program enrolment and formal advancement to degree candidacy. A candidate is a student who successfully completes advancement to candidacy requirements (defined below). Normally, advancement happens once the Simon Fraser University residency is fulfilled, but not later than the end of the ninth term after Ph.
